Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that require a multifaceted approach to treatment. These disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, can have severe physical and psychological consequences. Effective treatment involves a combination of medical, nutritional, and psychological interventions tailored to the individual’s needs.

Understanding eating disorders
Eating disorders are characterised by abnormal eating habits that negatively impact physical and mental health. Recognising the signs and symptoms early is crucial for effective intervention and recovery. They often stem from a combination of factors such as:

  • Genetic
  • Biological
  • Behavioural
  • Psychological
  • Social

Medical and nutritional interventions

Hospitalisation for severe eating disorder cases to stabilise vital signs and address malnutrition
Medical intervention is essential to address the physical health complications associated with eating disorders. This may include hospitalisation for severe cases to stabilise vital signs and address malnutrition. Nutritional counselling is also a key component, helping individuals restore healthy eating patterns and achieve a balanced diet. Nutritional education and meal planning are vital in helping patients regain a healthy relationship with food.1

Psychological therapies

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
Psychotherapy is a cornerstone of eating disorder treatment. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is particularly effective, helping individuals identify and change distorted thoughts and behaviours related to food and body image. Enhanced cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT-E) is a specialised form of CBT designed specifically for eating disorders. Family-based treatment (FBT) is another effective approach, especially for adolescents, involving family members in the recovery process to support healthy eating habits and weight restoration.

Support systems and self-help strategies

A strong support network and self-compassion are essential steps in the eating disorder recovery journey
Building a strong support network and practising self-compassion are essential steps in the recovery journey.2 Engaging in support groups provides a sense of community and shared experience, which can be incredibly empowering. Additionally, self-help strategies that are beneficial include:

  • Mindfulness.
  • Stress management techniques.
  • Developing a positive body image.

"Emotional hunger and physical hunger are very different. However, feeding yourself adequately can help to stave off cravings and avoid rushing to the pantry when you are feeling down. Eat proper full meals complete with carbs and protein such as rice and chicken or pasta with beef prevent binge attacks.

  • Foods containing tryptophan are needed to make serotonin, the body’s natural ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter. Serotonin makes melatonin, the hormone that regulate sleep. Therefore, eating foods high in tryptophan such as salmon, tofu, eggs, cheese, nuts, seeds and oats can help promote restful sleep.
  • Magnesium can help to promote calmness, relaxation and sleep. Foods high in magnesium are spinach, brown rice, oats, multigrain bread, walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, beans, lentils, avocado and bananas.
  • Foods that are low glycaemic index carbohydrates and are high in fibre help prevent sugar spikes. Sugar spikes reduces sleep quality and quantity. Avoid sugary drinks, desserts and chocolate just before bed. Caffeine and alcohol are best avoided if you are suffering from poor sleep.
  • Finishing your meal three hours before bedtime helps prevent acid reflux and it also allows proper digestion of food and absorption of nutrients that promote good sleep."
